bulb multi-packs Some Principles about Bulbs and Planting Planting time varies depending on flowering time. Plant spring-flowering bulbs in autumn so they can produce new roots during late autumn; summer flowering bulbs and autumn flowering bulbs are best planted from spring onwards. Click the hyperlink to go to further information on each variety.
Always plant with the pointed end to the top and the flat end to the base. Incorporating grit will help drainage. You can use a bulb-planting tool for a single bulb, or just a few bulbs, otherwise use a spade to clear the area you are planting, then shovel earth back onto the bulbs, to the correct depth. If planting in lawns, cut through and peel back the layer of turf, then plant the bulbs; then replace the turf and fill in any gaps with sieved soil. Deep-planting is recommended for tall-growing varieties - daffodils, tulips, gladioli, lilies, hyacinths. Always purchase healthy and strong bulbs - no rotting or blemishes. Bulbs can look good in window boxes, containers, under trees etc. The bigger the bulb, usually the better the bloom. Bulbs are often best planted in clusters, for effect. To prevent damage to bulbs which require lifting each year, plant them in chicken-wire cages buried to the correct depth, then lift out the whole cage at the appropriate time.
