Each year  we prepare for our customers a range of spectacularly colourful hanging baskets. We will make baskets up to your own specifications (choice of basket style, choice of plants and size of basket) if you prefer. We supply all the individual materials and plants, should you wish to prepare your own baskets at home. See also the short video clips below.

Tom has lots of skill and experience and has been making up our hanging baskets for years.

Below  we have a sequence of photographs illustrating the basics of preparing your own baskets. Of course there are many, many variations - but if you are new to hanging baskets let Tom guide you through the main steps, and you will get similar excellent results, every time!

Get your basket/s and your plants ready: Rather a lot of plants here, but that's because we have a lot of baskets to make up, for customers who order every year in March and April. What are we aiming for?

Tom is going to make up a basic basket  - using a basket with a plastic lining - which he punctures several times with a sharp instrument, in order to create drainage holes.   This is not necessary when using a 'natural' lining, for example moss, or coir, as drainage occurs easily through such linings. Once this is done you can begin to add compost  to your basket, firming lightly as you go along. When it is about 3/4 full smooth and flatten the medium and you are ready to begin adding the plants. Firstly, add trailing plants at the outer edge,  going all the way around.   When completed, cover the roots by adding more medium:  Don't overcrowd these edging plants - leave spaces between them. These spaces will later be filled with further, different plants, at the final step.  Firm lightly... Next, make a well, right in the middle, and add a selected 'central plant'.  Continue by adding further plants, between the central plant and the edging plants, all the way around until the space is filled..

Complete the basket by adding plants in the spaces (that we left, earlier) between the plants at the edge. The basic basket is now ready to be watered, and hung for a few days while the plants get their feet into the medium. At this point the newly-planted baskets look quite modest in appearance, however within a week or so the plants get properly established and then go on to make a magnificent show - see the videos of baskets from 2005, in the next section.

Once you have mastered the basics you will soon want to try varying the colour themes, plant layout, style of basket, and so on - the possibilities are endless and you can give your imagination free reign.

Rustic Winter Hanging Baskets

These newly-planted rustic hanging baskets will look great by Christmas and the New Year! As the plants steadily enlarge they will produce abundant foliage and flowers, life and colour, through the entire winter and on into spring!

The baskets are tough and durable and, with modest care only, will stay the course no matter what the winter brings, and you'll be able to enjoy them all the way through until you make up your summer baskets!

. The baskets are heavily planted (in rich, moisture retentive loamy soil) with winter flowering pansies, euonymus, thyme etc some of which might well be transplanted into the garden later.
